Below is a comment I made as a reply to someones comment about a post I had on Facebook. Basically, its my view / take / rant / foaming at the mouth about hitting the debt ceiling (again) and the possibility of our default. After I had written it, I actually thought it summed up most of feelings on what is going on right now. Also thought it would make a great blog post, so thats what I am doing here with it. I've not changed anything and it remains exactly as I posted the comment to Facebook:
The problem here (not with your comment, but the situation in general) is that we actually have 3 problems.
First off, is yes, we need to cut our spending. There is not doubt about that and I think (ok, maybe hope) both sides see and know this.
The second problem is related to our (nations) income. While yes, we do need to cut and look at our goals as a nation, there also is just not enough money to go around (and frankly, I am not sure you can cut enough to keep the programs that need to be there running without cutting off the leg to save the foot). Tax rates are at some of the lowest rates since the 1950s. In 1960, the top tax rate was 91%. Today, our top tax rate is 35%!!! That's huge! (http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2011/jun/29/barack-obama/barack-obama-says-tax-rates-are-lowest-1950s-ceos-/)
The third problem I see, and this is my personal view, is that the republicans are so hell bent on seeing Obama fail, they will do anything, and I repeat anything, to discredit him and make him look bad. And when I say they will do anything, I fully think they will let this country default (or maybe save it in just the last possible second!).
We, as a country, have gotten to a point, where our elected officials care more about their "party" and the next election then the job they were elected to do in the first place (and this goes for all sides of the aisle). Democrats are just to blame as Republicans in this case (and vise versea).
Frankly, if we do default (and I pray this does not happen or that we don't even get close, as it would be a crippling blow to our already dead economy), then I think we should remove all (and I mean all) elected officials (including the POTUS) and replace them with people who don't care what party they are from or politics as usual. (yes, I do live in a dream world. Its pretty nice, you should come visit).
Right now, all of our politicians remind me of bickering children who are taking their toys and going home because they don't know how to play nice, get along, and compromise . In the words of Cartman (from South Park), all of the politicians are basically saying "Screw you guys, I'm going home". That's exactly what what Boehner did today.
